Off the wall...

Many of the students have been encouraged to design repeated lengths for their final collections which is fantastic for the degree show in June as it really shows off the skills learnt in the past 3 years. There has been some gorgeous designs emerging in the print room as various students have been giving it a go.

But it is hard work! A design which has different colours requires a screen for each colour, the print table must be recovered, the metal stops of the print table must be measured accurately, amongst other preparations!

Each screen must be precisely lined up against the original design before the metal bar and bolts can be screwed in to ensure each screen will line up with each other when printed.

Above are images of students Ashleigh and Louise as they prepare to print the 3rd colour onto a length of wallpaper. Both students will be displaying their beautiful wallpaper designs at the degree show along with other students who have been printing repeats for fashion as well.

Everyone is getting excited about the show as lots of fantastic work is being produced, and it is becoming clear that the different variety of work will make for a visual treat for everyone coming to the show.

Matthew Williamson Competition

As part of the third and final year of our degree we are required to enter atleast one design competition, and hopefully by now everyone has applied to one. So just to spur everyone on and encourage taking part I thought i would bring to light fellow student Louise Holden's competition success from October 2009.

Louise entered a competition featured in Cosmopolitan magazine to win VIP tickets to an exclusive fashion show and evening with fashion designer Matthew Williamson. She spent the night in London at the event which featured a performance from the cast of Chicago, style workshops with GMTV's stylist Mark Heyes as well as having the time to chat with Matthew Williamson about his collections.

The lucky lady loved every minute of it and came away with plenty of inspiration for her project. Well done Louise!

Calling all Interior Designers...

Just found a new design competition you might like to enter for Interiors, designs for rugs to be exact...the competition also aims to help eradicate child labour in the rug industries in Nepal and India. The winners will also have their design made up which would be fantastic for any Interior based portfolio.

TIGERPRINT COMPETITION: TYPOGRAPHY

Hello! I've just come across a competition from Tigerprint (link here) which applicants must design a card with the theme of typography and love...unfortunately the deadline is tomorrow Monday 15th March! so unless you are super super quick or have something appropriate to submit already this post is about as much use as a chocolate teapot!

However...its definitely worth checking back with the competition website as they have various competition categories and seem to have competitions throughout the year!

Techniques...

The third years are currently working hard creating their minimum of 12 finals for the degree show on the 3rd June. Using techniques such as flocking, screen-printing and embroidery, the final pieces at the exhibition on Church Street, Hartlepool will be really exciting to see. Creating such artistic pieces does take time and effort, which everyone is quickly becoming a master at...

Congratulations Laura Allen

Wow - Well done Laura Allen who has been successfully awarded the prestigious finalist position within the competition 'The Art of Nurture'! This was a competition held by Lloyds TSB. The aim of the competition was to produce a piece of visual art that would support and illustrate a theme that related to advertising and marketing.

Laura entered a piece of artwork that she created as part of her minor project. It was a beautiful watercolour seahorse with an enchanting appearance. She entered the sea horse on a whim and she didnt expect to get an email notification back telling her she was a finalist. On the 11-03 Laura attended the reginal award ceremony which was held in Leeds.
